This is a unique opportunity to join one of Europe hottest FinTech companies (Sunday Times Tech Track, Everline Disruptor of the Year) in a senior engineering role. We are looking for a Lead Engineer to help us launch and build our satellite Bucharest engineering presence. You will work directly with our CTO to build and grow the business and join our co-founder (Bulgarian) and MD (Romanian) in developing our on the ground presence.
We are a fun, entrepreneurial and passionate business that is looking to disrupt how people pay for their trip towork. We are growing quickly with over £30mn of tickets processed to date, thousands of happy customers and big pipeline of new product innovation. We recently raised £ from leading UK angels and investors such Peter Jackson (CEO Travelex), Andy Murray (World No 1 Tennis Player), Anthony Gutman (Co-Head Goldman IBD), GavinCasey (CEO London Stock Exchange).
Our focus is technology first; we hate manual processes and will automate as much as possible building a robust back-end to support our simple and intuitive front-end system.
Your role
As the Lead Engineer you will have a unique opportunity to build CommuterClub’s engineering team alongside our CTO on the ground. You will act as primary interface with the London office and will be responsible for managing and ensuring delivery of great product and code. We expect to eventually build a team of 5-10 locally based engineers and you will act as manager, team lead and chief coder.
You will report directly to our CTO and will work with our founder and management team to help execute complex build tasks and develop innovative applications to help commuters in the UK and across Europe. You will be a strong leader able to manage and motivate your team while managing stakeholders in London.
You will take responsibility for both your own and your teams work streams and will have significant autonomy to develop a solution to challenging technical problems. You will pro-actively engage with the Management or Product team and will love working collaboratively using modern communication tools such as Telegram, Skype, Assembla and phone.

What we are looking for
We are looking for an independent, curious, industrious and diligent leader to take our platform forward:
• Minimum of 4-5 years’ experience in a leadership role building scalable and innovative web applications
• Leadership / senior developer role in consumer facing, transactional, technology driven organisation(evidence of direct reports)
• Ability to interact with non-technical stakeholders, to analyse requirements and design system architecture
• You love working with LAMP / WAMP (Linux, PHP5, MySQL, Apache) and are comfortable writing complex code across PHP, MySQL, JavaScript
• Familiarity with AWS server management
• Experience in consuming APIs (AWS, Stripe, Sendgrid, Twillio and more) as well as supporting our own API
• Preferably university-level degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or Mathematics.
• Strong communication skills with comfort interacting in English

About our stack
We have to stay nimble while delivering mission-critical code. To do so we constantly prioritise keeping both our stack and our code base lean.
We build simple, reliable systems on top of technologies we understand and trust. We’re primarily built in PHP using MVC principles, and we rely on MySQL and Apache to keep things running.
Our server is cloud hosted using AWS RDS and we operate a robust infrastructure structure environment to ensure minimal down time and high reliability for our transactional system.
The team is lean and we deploy many times a day, supported by a test suite we trust and a culture of code moto is fail fast, fail often and we are always incrementally improving our code and platform.
